Generally, rock stars' original bands either are never rekindled, or shouldn't be. The revival of Tom Petty's early Gainesville crew breaks both rules. Mudcrutch steps out with a juicy blues-rock--looser and more psychedelic than the Heartbreakers'--that should've made them famous the first time.

The St. Louis five fits tidily into power pop's black humor corner, populated by such bands as OK Go and the Barenaked Ladies. As with both those acts, the equation is addictive chord structures and vivid kiss-offs (read: "high-maintenance means/ you're a gluttonous queen/ narcissistic and mean.")

French Kicks can not be accused of musical laziness. They blend manic rhythms, crooning vocals, and keyboards atmospherics to truly unique ends. This New York-based trio utilizes the original post-punk ethos and suffuses it with pop melodies. If ambient music were disco, French Kicks would rule the dance floor.
