Mudcrutch
Generally, rock stars' original bands either are never rekindled, or shouldn't be. The revival of Tom Petty's early Gainesville crew breaks both rules. Mudcrutch steps out with a juicy blues-rock--looser and more psychedelic than the Heartbreakers'--that should've made them famous the first time.
Finding Emo
Although "emo rock" may be more of a '90s term, contemporary bands such as Fall Out Boy have revitalized the genre. Some prefer "punk-pop," but whatever you call them, these bands are all emo-tional.

Goldfrapp
We'd never leap to calling Goldfrapp "traditionalists," but the U.K. act's latest shows a strong awareness of the folk-driven pop produced in the group's same English hills three decades back. Gloss those sturdy structures with synths, top off with postmodern soul vocals--and be sated.
R.E.M.
The post-Bill Berry R.E.M. has at times seemed confused about its larger purpose, but new LP "Accelerate" employs a time-tested cure: simplify your rock. Recorded quickly and roughly, it brings back the rugged guitars and gutty vocals that we once labeled as "college."
She & Him
The notion of the actress-turned-singer has been rightly skewered, but leave your skepticism at the door with Zooey Deschanel. In this new collab with scene prince M. Ward, she channels classic torch and jazz chanteuses in an indie pop framework. The results are sweet and affecting.
Hilary McRae
McRae's sound is pure pop sugar refined by touches of jazz--think Sara Bareilles with a Diana Krall session team. The backdrop of rowdy guitars, fortissimo horns, and rumbling rhythms is outsized to the point of risk, but the young singer's vocals refuse to get swallowed up.
