In the early '90s in the Indian state of Goa, psychedelic trance (or Goa trance) blossomed alongside an international backpacking community. The movement is the earliest form of electronic dance music, originating before trance music became popular in the U.K. and the U.S.; it's characterized by repetitive acid loops (130-150bpm) and frantic psychedelic bass lines, the idea being to induce an altered state of consciousness. Labels such as Dragonfly, TIP, and Flying Rhino were instrumental in developing a strong Goa trance movement, along with pioneer producers Infected Mushroom, Astral Projection, and Hallucinogen.
