In all periods of jazz history there have been large ensembles performing arranged music, but 'big bands' are most often associated with the music of the 1930s and '40s. Big bands are generally made up of a rhythm section and a large horn ensemble with trumpets, trombones, and saxophones, all performing song arrangements, and one or more soloists or vocal leads.
