Where jazz-funk takes a funky backbeat and adds jazz harmony, free funk adds the wild, out-of-control sounds and improvisation that emerged in the free jazz era. The results are groovy in terms of rhythm, counterbalanced by a freewheeling, experimental sound often anchored by a rhythm section of drums, electric bass and guitar.
