A sandy derivative of Motown's highly danceable good-time pop, beach soul was the fitting moniker pinned to the regional music played at 1960s beach parties in the American southeast. Although beach soul never came close to making a mainstream breakthrough a la Motown, a few tunes did crawl up the national charts in the '60s, including the Casinos' "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" and the Tams' "What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am)." Nevertheless, beach soul has retained its cult popularity through the ensuing decades.
