San Francisco's satiric / erotic jazz wave ensemble was the bleeding edge of the gay musical movement from 1980 to 1985.
Queercore is a type of punk distinguished by lyrics addressing gay rights, oppression, same-sex attraction, and gender identity. Like the riot grrrls of the '90s, queercore bands incorporated the same DIY ethos and tradition of protest to challenge conventional society's ideas about gender and sexuality. At their most subversive, queercore bands offered a revolutionary critique of homophobia in the hardcore scene as well as bourgeois conformity in the gay scene.
