What Is Riot Grrrl?

This grassroots punk-feminist movement started in the early 1990s. Deeply embedded in punk's DIY ethos and tradition of protest, riot grrrl artists addressed gender-specific issues dealing with female empowerment, rape, domestic abuse, sexuality, body image, and sexism. Musically they opted for an unconventionally abrasive sound that served several purposes: it challenged the stereotypes that women were overtly sensitive and meek; it ensured that the music would never be appropriated into mainstream society; and it was a powerful tool in which to spread their message of "Revolution Girl Style Now!" against patriarchal society and the male dominance of the punk scene. Quintessential riot grrrl bands such as Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and 7 Year Bitch never reached the popularity or notoriety of less subversive alt-rock outfit Hole. However, they did leave a monumental impact in indie culture and paved the way for girls everywhere to speak up, rock out, and show the boys how it's done.
