Some people call them a folk band. Others do not. Some people say they sound like Moby. Others do not. Still others call them the Men in Gitis. And those people are right.
Basically this is a catchy name for folksingers with punk-rock ideals and/or 'alternative' musical leanings. The term 'anti-folk' originated in New York City in the 1980s to describe such raw-edged but still folk-inspired singer-songwriters as Cindy Lee Berryhill, Lach, and Roger Manning. Though the term was originally fairly specific to that late-'80s New York crowd, it's managed to branch out to include the likes of Billy Bragg, Ani DiFranco, Michelle Shocked, and even, to some degree, Beck.
