Known to some as the Bristol sound, Trip-Hop is a downtempo breakbeat style that takes hip-hop into the left field. This sample-heavy genre borrows anything from old-school jazz loops to orchestral and world music grooves, and incorporates everything into a lo-fi, urban format. Although it has proven to be fertile ground for Hip-Hop lyricists, Trip-Hop often tends to explore the more instrumental and musically developed side of things, sometimes bordering on the psychedelic. Artists like Coldcut and Massive Attack are among the more notable artists credited with the UK development of Trip-Hop, while stateside artist DJ Shadow continues to take the genre into new territory.
