Imaginative and rich

25-Oct-2006 02:29:40 PM
Reviewer: JohnLKing

Mr Ilic's realization of Debussy's First Book of Preludes is imaginative and rich. He captures the full scope of Debussy's phenomenal expressive capabilities.

His interpretation is so evocative that it seems less like an interpretation, and more like a direct window into Debussy's subtle and colorful world. His technical security is demonstrated in his dazzling, bold performance of Ce qu'a vu le Vent d'Ouest; his melodic control shows throughout the long lines of La fille aux cheveux de lin.

However, the most significant indication of Mr. Ilic's artistic maturity is his ability to shape such a substantial set of Preludes into a cohesive musical vision. One that sustains the audience's attention and deceptively makes the set seem shorter than it actually is.

Mr. Ilic's performance is refreshing; the audience experiences Debussy donning a brand new set of ears.

A musical montage

Reviewer: Joyce Hu

Ivan Ilic transports the listener into the dream-like world of Debussy, conjuring a myriad of images, emotions, and personalities as he unfolds the stories of these prıludes.

He demonstrates both variety and depth in his interpretation, from his portrayals of the mysterious and elusive wind in ıVoilesı (Sails), to the stillness and desolation of a passed moment in ıDes pas sur la neigeı (Footprints in the Snow), through the playfulness and erraticism of ıLa Danse de Puckı (Puckıs Dance), to the pang of nostalgia in ıLa Cathıdrale Engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral).

His soulful interpretation is paralleled by his pianism. Conscientious of his pedaling, he explores the nuances of tone and blend and creates a palette of colors and shadings that invites a person to listen with oneıs eyes. This recording is a must-have for lovers of any art form and has been a joy for me to listen to on many occasions.
