Once again, not funk

22-Feb-2006 01:52:54 PM
Reviewer: funkfreq

Oh boy, here we go again -- I'm going through and reviewing Funk artists listed here and most of them, quite frankly, are not funky. Case in point, this band. I don't know if it's the swing feel of Jazz which has diluted the funkiness of most drummer's efforts to play funk, but this is a perfect example of too much swing in a funk rhythm destroying the funk. The dreaded "modern" sound invades once again, with an anemic bass, drums that are too cavernous, and all the other trappings of nasty so-called "funk" music. The compositions here are more like T.V. theme music than anything I'd actually want to hear regularly. Noodly, without coherence or direction, the songs sort of wander on in an attempt at "jazz" that misses that mark as well. Not everyone can be The Meters or James Brown or John Coltrane or Miles Davis or even Prince; this band is proof.
