Remember the first time you fell in love? I mean giddy-head-over-heels-acting-like-a-fool type love? Watching this band play live made it clear that's how Crenshaw (especially the guy on keys and lead vocals) feels about their music. That guy is in the middle of a torrid love-affair with his work and it's infectious. You can sense this in their recordings, but risk being overwhelmed by it at their live shows.
I first heard Crenshaw as the openning act at a General Public show and can honestly say that I was disappointed when they left the stage.
Ironically, that same passion is what will keep Crenshaw from "making it big." By which I mean, it's hard to imagine any willingness on the band's part to compromise their art for radio-friendliness, and as it is (consider this a compliment) this music is too soulful, nuanced and intelligent for ClearChannel. Hopefully the net will help overcome that hurdle.
If I may be so bold as to make a related artist recommendation...If you like Crenshaw, I bet you'll dig _Boy on a Dolphin_, a British band that had one great release in about 1993 (Words Inside) and then went away. Shocking musical parallels between the two bands.
