DNTEL + Death Cab = a perfect mix

These guys have gotten more than their fair share of acclaim on the site, and I feel kinda bad giving them even more, but damnit, the music is just so fun to listen to. Still, I'd probably give higher marks to Death Cab For Cutie if they were on the site. The Postal Service is great, but the lyrics aren't Ben Gibbard's best work.

A major contributer to the rebirth of Alternative music scene

02-Dec-2004 10:09:54 AM
Reviewer: WheelerCub

Since the early 90's with the explosion of bands like Nirvana into the alternative music scene, a thousand Nirvana clones have been spawned and quickly crashed the synthpop, and old school alternative music scenes like the stock market that shortly followed. These old favorites were in a dead pool for years forcing bands like Depeche Mode, the Cure, Love & Rockets, and U2 to evolve their sounds at the cost of a natural development. But old school fans just weren't interested in those drastic changes. Just like all the other music generes struggling to get back on their feet, synthpop and old school alternative fell off the face of the earth and were swallowed by a mass of second rate grundge bands.

Well thanks to bands like the Postal Service, the alternative, synthpop, and now indie music scene aren't just alive and well, but have finally gained back the worldwide appeal that they had back in the hay day. The Postal Service is pivotal to this new movement as they have appealed to a wide variety of new and older audiences and have awoken many of us from our hibernation of sound or had simply given up trying to find good music years ago.

What is important to remember here is that this band is fantastic and their debut album is phenomenal from the first track to the last. Sure a few songs got swallowed by the masses, but there are so many gems to enjoy within their collection you'll hardly notice. If you enjoy these tracks be sure to pick up their album--you won't be disappointed.

Also be sure to check out the similar artist section of the Postal Service. From there you will find an excellent breadcrumb trail back to the underground music scene which actually leads back to late 80's alternative and the mid 90's Electro scenes.

Awesome. Just gets a little repetitive towards the end of the CD. Great music, lyrics and incredible musicianship.

You know you are good and you are just flaunting it! Well keep on flaunting it because the peeps like it. No, not the sugar-coated kind. The human-kind. My friends and I listened to the tracks and voted unanimously to keep you on our Isle of Music. Lucky you!

heartbreaking heavenly harmonics

Reviewer: spmxy1977

this band is beautiful. they have the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs. their sound is slightly symphonic, a surge of swells & emotion. landscapes unroll themselves from within the clever poetics they have forged here. listen...love sounds like this. as does a heart breaking...& then healing itself.

the best music should be transformative. this is such music. not only does the listener feel themselves expand & lift up within each individual song, but at times they find themselves transported into the most fragile landscape of thoughts. "clark gable" is heady & heartstrong, while "natural anthem" stands out as the albums most majestic & dark moment, it's sheer scope & sardonic simplicity at once scathing & sincere.

perhaps detachment is one the overriding themes on these stunning album. after all, the weight of each song's content is delivered at times in an offhand manner, but it has to be...if these words were afforded their actual emotional currency, the entire album would be wrought with tears. the postal service deliver a cold heart of sound, a tundra of tunes, a package packed with a heart bled but still read by the lover who ripped apart. too poetic? then you won't understand the sheerness of this sound. but if it makes perfect sense, then you have mail thanks to the postal service. give up & give in.

Sappy, boring, and just plain *****.

These guys are the Air Supply of the new millenium - they try way too hard to be sincere and sensitive. Its as if they are whispering in a chick's ear trying to get her in bed, and I'm sure there are plenty of women out there who fall for this *****. Death Cab 4 Cutie is just as bad or worse. Please - go back to your day jobs and stop whisper singing.
