This is real world music, not your yuppie nonsense. Their most recent cd is absolutely worth checking out. They, along with another band in particular, Gogol Bordello (who is not featured on this site... *****, cnet?), are the pioneers of the Gypsy punk genre. This Gypsy punk title... I think they use it only because those two bands are indeciferable amalgams of multiple folk styles. The nomadic Gypsy lifestyle was one of picking up musical stylings in different countries and incorporating them all with a traditional Gypsy folk spin, and this is how these guys work. This music is like a jolt of spice into what has become an increasingly painfully boring, uniform, and angsty "alt/indie" scene.
If anyone has any doubts at all, believe me when I say you have not yet lived until you've attended a live Gogol Bordello show. I caught Kulture Shock when they opened for GB at Irving Plaza. These two bands playing together make you completely unable to stand still. You just need to be moving, dancing, shakin' it, head banging, thrashing... it doesn't even matter. You can be anything from a metal-head to a bellydancing enthusiast and still enjoy the talent, passion, and musicianship these guys have.
