I've seen Loreena this year. An experience I shared with my daughter and my mother. It was an experience I will never forget. Her music just gets better! Contemporary medievil

She never ceases to amaze me with her haunting and moving music and vocals. The blend of the unusual instruments the melodies and her lilting voice are truly a gift to ones ears.

Her songs are not simply brilliant technical machines...they have a vibrant soul. They are greater than the sum of their parts. I always return to the food metaphor: like nutricious and tasty meals, her album's songs don't always go down easy...in the sense that they ask a lot from one's palate. This isn't your typical watered-down overly romanticized Celtic mush.
The songs on "An Ancient Muse," as individual creations, are very strong (the arrangements are daring, the melodies clear, the chord progressions unexpected, Loreena's voice searing and exultant, and the rhythms as complex as ever); however, I suffered a bit of jetlag and exhaustion while listening. The geographic locales and stories were far from seamless, both thematically and musically, as they progressed along, (which is true for her other albums). But with this recording, all I can seem to handle is one at a time, due to the overwhelming richness of them and the demand they give me. As a poet, I often encounter this when writing a book. Too much compression of texture or imagery leads to a kind of forced togetherness between pieces, and a secret yearning to expand within the material becomes evident. I would say that her most naturally "together" album is The Mask and Mirror, followed closely with "The Book of Secrets." Also, some of the lyrics can seem to border on cliche...but again, the music is so powerful that it hardly matters what the words are sometimes.
