The Thieves of Kailua

What does it sound like when cool has been stolen?

Perhaps it is the really bright sound of the instruments or angelic harmonies of the singers, but I believe this is what happens when someone sincerely understands the music of the past and applies it to a contemporary style, resulting in something which quenches the decades long thirst for good music. This is spot on! The similar artists chosen are good representations of this sound. If you ever wake up after a night which resembles the last half hour of "Apocalypse Now," this is the music you should probably hear to let you know that in the end, it will all be OK!

Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS)

So, Brazil is the big one, right?

Holy moly. I thought I was getting too old to enjoy highly electric music. I am not talking about the style, although there is a strong electronica breeze flowing through the samples on download.com. I am referring to hyperactive urban rock expositioned at most vampire raves since 1998; of course, before Blade kicks off everyone's face. Sexy and electric. Selextric fun. I've always wondered what the little gremlins in my computer are doing whenever they give me a blue screen of death. Now I know: They are at a party, rocking out to CSS!

Really? But I barely know you...

Sleepier than an acoustic Bjork, but more exciting than a church hymn, "Limbs" is the only taste of this Editor's Pick (I downloaded on 7/18/2007) that I am permitted on download.com. I need more because I am on the fence. The quality of the file is magnificent; although I think that is not a problem these days. The singer is quite good. The lyrics and music do not match so well (at points), so it seems like a stretch at times. This is a welcome addition to my playlist nonetheless. If ever there was a song to be played as a tall woman daydreams in the supermarket after successfully considering all the options in regard to getting Peter Pan over Jif peanut butter, this would be it. Good job overall, Emma Pollock!

Rai

Dis wut ize tawkin bout!

Rai hits it on the head. Wonderful voice, and memorable lyrics! Of course I should not forget to mention that the accoustic guitar would sound like just another musician if it was not for her singing style. I love the repeating intonations as they build energy to continue the song. I have listened to all except the last two on the list, and you know I will get to those!! Look at her. She knows she is good! If ever there was a soundtrack to a lost female space fighter pilot who recounts her life as the oxygen runs out, and then she is discovered and rescued by the perfect man who happens to be a pirate and who, unfortunately loves his beautiful space pirate wife, the music from Rai would be it.

The Veils

Advice for Downloaders to Be

I am still smiling about how clever my title is. Anyway, I like this group, but I have heard only the free track available here. "Advice..." is easy to listen to by manner of its great sound quality and established musical style, which is kind of like if Keane was transported to the 60s; hopefully having found something to laugh about. I recommend this as your power song when you are behind in the go-kart race, and it's the final lap.
