Tom Waits

One of the most unique and talented songwriters of our time

Five stars doesn't cut it. "Alternative/Punk ý Experimental" doesn't describe him. How could any single genre? Even though his influence may be hard to trace because, let's face it, *no one* sounds anything like him, it's still impossible to deny that Tom Waits is one of this generation's greatest artists.

I didn't know they were still around

Magnapop's 1991 self-titled album was great. I wasn't even aware they were still around. I'm going to have to go get this album and see what the story is.

Soundtrack to my flashback

I love this guy! How can you *not* love a guy who takes 80's pop and turns it into drum and bass, then spruces it up a bit with the vocal stylings of Stephen Hawking? This makes me want to dance like Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club. You know the dance I'm talking about. Elbows in, head slightly forward with the hair covering up the face, on the stair landing, doing that wierd kick and faint dance that looks like you're trying to get in an areobics workout. Music like this was made for dances like that.

N. Lannon

Easily one of 2004's best albums that nobody heard.

Bias alert: I know this guy and count him as a friend. But damnation this album is good. I can't even think of a band or sound to compare it to. The songs are break-down-and-cry beautiful. The album as a whole sometimes wanters off into almost Simon and Garfunkle-esque folk sounds, but overall always manages to come back to the spaced out, electronificated, rainy afternoon lonely and introspective sound that is Mr. Lannon's halmark. Certainly one of the best records of 2004 that nobody heard.

Power and grace

This band is like a punk rock Portishead. Fuzzy, straight-forward rock is accompanied by the graceful lyrics of the exceptionally talented Maura Davis and leave me with that feeling of having been in the presence of something elemental; something indivisible. Like a more mature and less exuberant Pretty Girls Make Graves, this band puts to the wax the notion that power is making things happen.
