A Horrible Disappointment
Being a huge Modest Mouse fan from the very beginning, I was more than pumped to hear that 'We Were Dead...' was being released. I bought the CD the first day it was at the store and listened to it. And threw it away.
I love Modest Mouse with a passion, especially the 'Moon and Antarctica', 'Everywhere & His Nasty Parlour Tricks' era, but this CD was a huge let down. There was an obvious change in technique during 'Good News...', which was different, but still good. 'We Were Dead...' exemplifies this change which undermines Modest Mouse's typical sound. The popularity that came with 'Good News...', I'm afraid, spoiled the musicality of Modest Mouse for good.
The album was not cohesive, the tracks lacked any type of musical value, and they seemed to seek to please the crowd. Many tracks seem experiemntal and underdeveloped, and all of the tracks are mediocre at best.
If you didn't like this album, but you are still interested in Modest Mouse, I sincerely recommend the LPs 'Moon and Antarctica' and 'Everywhere & His Nasty Parlour Tricks'
