Lee Hazlewood

Talk about deep

So great to see Lee finding a new audience, he's got a seriously deep musical history that's worth investigating--producing Duane Eddy and Nancy Sinatra, among other stars, not to mention a series of amazing trypped-out existential-cowboy solo albums. His new '07 album is his finest in ages--rumbling the desert with his deep voice and kicking, as always, against the *****.

Kacey Jones

Doing Newbury right

The late Mickey Newbury was an underrated '70s country master, no one wrote songs like he did -- in Nashville or otherwise. Save maybe Leonard Cohen or Van Morrison. Kacey captures his moody depths with sassy Southern country-soul flavor.

Merle Haggard

This is country

Time for Merle? It's always time. One of the 20th century's finest songwriters, country or otherwise--and still kickin' out the footlights in the 21st.
