Flight of the Conchords

the best 4th most popular folk parody duo from New Zealand

Flight of the Conchords is one of the funniest shows on television mainly because of the music and accompanying videos. These two can and do play almost any style and yet have created something smart and original.

White Whale

Great new band from an old favorite

After not hearing much from him in a while, I was excited to find out that Matt Suggs (of the late, great Butterglory) had a new band. Judging from the song "The Admiral," the White Whale is going to be as huge as its name (that's a corny thing to say, sorry). I forgive them for the nautical theme and animal band name. The White Wale rocks (the boat). Sorry!

Towers of London

All style, no substance

I read about these guys in some dubious music rag recently (SPIN, I got it at the airport) and wasn't expecting much. They seem to believe that believing is enough, that believing whole-heartedly in rock 'n' roll cliches to the point of absurdity is enough. They might get by on tenacity, like the Darkness, but this highly derivative, generic punk/glam is ultimately uninspired.

Morrissey

An all-time favorite doesn't dissapoint

Morrissey's staying power is impressive. He sounds as good now as he every did. 2004's "comeback" record was good, but the songs were a bit over-produced and slick. However, judging by this track, I can't wait to hear the new record.

Julie Doiron

Gutsy but amateurish

It's obvious Julie Doiron likes to be creative and take chances with her music, but her lack of talent bogs these songs down. Her voice isn't good by conventional standards, but it also isn't interesting or weird enough to compensate. Her piano playing is so rudimentary and off-balance, I'm inclined to assume she plays intentionally bad as an artistic pose. It's all fairly amateurish and this is coming from someone who doesn't have high standards or a high regard for musical prowess.
