Reason is a complete music system. It features samplers, analog synths, mixers, step time drum machines, effects, and a real-time multitrack sequencer for fast and intuitive music making. All of Reason's devices have the look and feel of the real thing, and you can use each device as many times as your CPU can handle. Reason hooks up to your MIDI keyboard, giving you MIDI control of all devices, knobs, faders, and parameters. Whether you're a big-time producer or a bedroom DJ, this application provides all the necessary tools to create, edit, and mix the music of your choice, all from the comfort of your own computer. Version 2.5 adds four new sound processing tools and two utilities for signal path routing.

Building on the success of its Roland TB-303, TR-808, TR-909 emulator ReBirth, Propellerhead Software pushes into the future with Reason, a full rack of synths, samplers, drum machines, and powerful effects. Users will find almost limitless possibilities in the massive collection of sounds and the easy-to-program step sequencer.

The first thing you'll notice is the unique user interface, which duplicates a real studio rack. Even better is how the Tab key rotates the whole rack so you can see how everything is connected via virtual cables. The overall sound quality of Reason is clean and bright. Although the demo has limited presets, the full retail version comes with two CDs full of sounds. The step sequencer and arrangement tools are basic but offer plenty of flexibility for composing professional-sounding tunes. Although Reason is a powerful program with great-sounding instruments, it focuses a bit narrowly on making dance music. Reason is full-featured and customizable enough for experienced producers to make original songs, and the friendly step sequencer and top-notch layout make it easy for beginners to get bumpin'.
