It's not hard to find the file size of a single folder in Windows. However, doing the same set of operations for even a few at a time quickly becomes tedious. This little utility offers a simple solution to the problem, adding a new column in the Windows Explorer window that gives folders' total sizes, so tracking down space-wasters suddenly becomes a snap. The program offers only a few options, allowing users to set the column name and a choice of measurement unit. The basic version recalculates folder sizes every time they are displayed, while a $5 pro version caches the information for faster recovery. Even so, we were quite pleased with the program's performance, and would recommend it to virtually any computer user as a potentially valuable source of information.

"A beautiful Windows addition that lets me see the size of folders"

Pros: This integrates into the Windows shell, meaning that after its installed it looks like it came with windows (Windows should come with this). I have a new column at the top that displays the size of not only files (as is inherent in Windows) but also the folder size. It is such a slick piece of software, I couldn't be much more happy.

Cons: When opening folders or drives that have a lot of data stored in them (~>100 gig)it can take a while (15 sec) to display all of the folder sizes. If you last left the folder in detail view and sorted by folder size, it can take that same amount of time just for the Window to open after clicking on it. I understand that this is resolved by a cache in FolderSize Pro (though I've not yet tried it).
