Selling your guitar to pay for recording your tunes must count among the more poignant songwriter's images. In the case of former Imaginary Baseball Leaguer Robinson, we're guessing he'll be able to buy a few more. Solo debut "We Are Racing Ghosts" is deeply felt indie pop.
Nashville songsmith Aaron Robinson will release his debut solo album, We Are Racing Ghosts (Undertow) on April 15th. The former figurehead behind the blogger-lauded indie-pop quartet Imaginary Baseball League has taken a personal, and mature approach to this album. Along with catchy pop hooks and lush arrangements, We Are Racing Ghosts is rife with haunting stories of Aarons own musical family tree, most evident in the folky Dreamers And Preachers, which mourns the tragic loss of a close and influential uncle. It is a record that beautifully documents the frantic self-analysis of an heir to some very lofty expectations. After selling off many possessions to finance the record, including the guitar with which all the songs were written, Aaron began working on Ghosts in May of 2007. Producer Neilson Hubbard (Glen Phillips, Matthew Ryan, Matthew Perryman Jones) hosted the project at his Nashville studio, Mr. Lemons. Key performers on the record include Hubbard himself, songwriter Garrison Starr, and The Greencards Eamon McLoughlin. In addition to being the inspiration behind Aarons most upbeat yet most melancholic song (Broken Heart Empty Room), Aarons mother Judy Crawley Robinson also provides ethereal background vocals on Karen, an aching ode to 70s pop icon Karen Carpenter. We Are Racing Ghosts is a universal concept album, a disarming collage of music & lyrics meant to be shared, and an intimate portrait of an artists call to duty. It is about measuring the progress of those who struggled to dream before us, and carrying their torch the rest of the way. While in his former bands, Aaron could be seen sharing stages w/ Songs: Ohia, Wheat, and The Features. They also garnered attention from the likes of BBC Radio1 & CMJ.
