Editor's review

Simon & Garfunkel sound downright hard rock compared to this uber-mellow hush-folker. But the downy sound of abode's tracks masks a keen lyrical edge. Like Elliott Smith, abode uses whispery, dubbed lyrics and clean acoustic guitars to share deeply intimate notions.

Biography

abode's music is best categorized (if it must be) as hush folk, and he draws heavily on influences from 70’s folk song writers such as roy harper, simon and garfunkel, Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake, although many other influences slip into the mix. His music is characterized by his acoustic finger-picking style, and softly (hush) dubbed vocals, with often dark (but perhaps hopeful?) lyrical content. Abode's current release is intitled "the cassandra theory" and has 16 songs freely available at www.soundclick.com/abode ,his previous releases include "the factory" “to put on the shelf…” a 20 song collection of bedroom 4-track recordings (also completely free online), in addition to an album he recorded solely for his girlfriend at that time (back in 1995/96). His greatest claim to fame is when Gosch Productions, used a song from “to put on a shelf…” for their independent movie “last ride” which featured other Calgary acts including Downway. In addition a few of his songs have bounced within the top ten range under mp3.com’s “alternative/folk punk” category. Prior to going solo, abode played in the Calgary punk band esl (other members from this band went on to form Shecke Forme with Aaron Booth), and in an older Calgary metal act badly named Acid Mirage (later called dayworld) when he was in his youths. Due to the personal nature of his music abode finds it easiest to record all his material himself. abode has played a few live shows, that were very much “deer in headlight” affairs, made difficult by the varying tunings he uses for each song and the fact that he is awfully shy. Abode creates a new blend of acousticholly, and whether anyone is listening or not he will continue to write, hide behind and make tunes available via his soundclick.com portal (at www.soundclick.com/abode) Music is not abode’s career, it is an outlet.
