Those who still insist on relegating hard core to the "noise" category ought to check out this New Zealand group, which shows the lyricism and rhythmic cleverness of the genre without sacrificing any of its trademark power-chord assault. Those waves of distortion dominate, as they should, but hard-core has always been about simmering drums, and Zane Read's are solid.
Agent emerged onto the New Plymouth Hardcore scene in early 2002. Combining a mixture of hard rock, metal, alternative, and hardcore, Agent has developed a unique and original sound within the New Zealand music scene bucking any current trends. Agent features Jimi Donaldson (vocals and guitar), Zane Read (drums), and Matt Flower (Bass). Matt has recently joined since the departure of original bass player Red Mann. To date Agent have released an EP "The Pheng Nom Shakedown" (2003) from which the title track was released as a single along with a video on C4 and Juice TV. Other songs on the EP have also appeared on various New Zealand Music compilation CDs and have featured on Sky TV's extreme sport/music show "XSTV". "The Pheng Nom Shakedown" is currently getting airplay on the b-net radio stations as well as Paul Martin's Axe Attack on The Rock. Agent also released the single 'Powertrip' in January 2005, which has been getting regular rotation on the B-net's and Paul Martin's Axe Attack on The Rock. 'Powertrip' has also appeared on 'Reconstruction', a compilation CD of NZ bands from which the profits are donated to the victims of the Boxing Day Tsunami via the NZ Red Cross. Agent have been building a solid reputation as a live act with regular shows around the North Island over the past year and a half, the highlight being their own 7-date North Island headlining tour during May/June 2004 sponsored by Area 51 Studios. Agent has played with a large number of NZ bands including Stardrunk, The WBC, and Chuganaut. All of Agent's endeavours are self-funded, although applying for various grants and competitions, Agent is not a band to sit around and wait for things to happen by themselves. Recently Agent has gained the support of New Plymouth based clothing label Taranaki Hardcore, who now sponsor the band. On 11th June 2005, Agent released their latest single Hiatus, which includes two bonus tracks - Pawn and Cold Culture Artwork. This is to be backed up with a brand new video for the song. Hiatus has been receiving
rave reviews in leading NZ music newspapers, magazines, and websites. Agent's plans are to keep playing regular shows and spread the good word of live original music.
