Editor's review

Also known as Mustang and as Beatless, Visions records' entrepreneur Alex Attias established himself as one of Switzerland's top jocks on the dance-music circuit in the late '80s, later evolving into the eclectic jazz genre, with which he sounds very much at home.

Biography

Alex Attias is Mustang. And Back Home is the first Mustang album.

Mister Attias loves to spend time with his family. He also is fond of eating and cooking: Morroccan, Japanese, Italian and Thai food. Red and white wine. Reading lots of books. Getting all down with sport. Travelling and going to the cinema watching movies: 60s French films, old Mel Brooks stuff, Star Wars, Pixar animation and Kung Fu flicks. But moreover, Signore Alex Attias is a renowned international DJ!

Starting off in the magical 1988, with pulsating sets embracing House, Funk and Disco classics, he later progressed on to the "Eclectic Jazz thing". Throughout the late 80's and early 90's, he established himself as one of Switzerland's top Dj's running his own successful weekly nights –for example as part of the COOP sessions at Plastic People / London--, being booked to play all over Europe, and in return booking top international Dj's to play in Switzerland. Alex also was a long-time collaborator for the magazine Vibrations, writing reviews and compiling their series of albums.

By 1995, he was ready to break into Electronic music production, contributing a track to the 5 Star Galaxy compilation in the company of producer Patrick "Rollercone" Duvoisin. The following year he set up the Bel-Air Project, and began attracting attention with their first release Magik, which was featured on one of the famous Sourcelab compilations. Bel-Air Project's next two releases became minor underground cult classics "Jazz with Altitude" and "Dark Jazzor" were both championed by the likes of 4 Hero, Gilles Peterson and Stacey Pullen. At that time, Alex set up his own record stable label Corn-Flex and was busy collaborating under different disguises, with Paul Martin as Beatless and with his Bel-Air colleague as Funkanova.

1997 saw the demise of the Bel-Air Project and Alex moved to England to pursue new musical projects. Mustang and Beatless are currently the main sources of his creative output (plus a few sporadic collaborations: River Plate with his brother Stephane, and Plutonia with Dego from 4 Hero).

Three years down the row Alex set up his new record stable label, Visions Inc., for which he's been busy recording with super keyboard whiz kid Jessica Lauren, producing tracks for soul singer Vanessa Freeman, and his own Mustang project.

The first brilliant Beatless album "Life Mirrors" was released in October 2001 on the American label Ubiquity, featuring tracks recorded in San Francisco with the Daughters from the 70's band the Sons and Daughters of Lite, with Stones Throw rapper Quasimoto, and the multitalented Colonel Red. Around the same time, Irma Records from Italy released his "Quiet Moments" compilation, an assortment of chilled and spaced Jazz tracks from the past to unwind to.

A selection of Visions single releases and exclusives have been released September 2002 on a compilation entitled "The Chromatic Universe" featuring treats from Dego, I.G. Culture, Plutonia, Vanessa Freeman, Mustang and Domu to name but a few. He?s also created a soundtrack for the French channel ARTE to accompany "Anomalies Passageres ", a film directed by Nadia Fares.
The first volume of Goya Music?s new Dj CD mixes series has been completed by the Mustang man himself, and the series will continue with Dego, Bugz in The Attic, IG Culture, Domu and some of the Djs worldwide who are into sweet tunes! More bizzyness is on its way!
