Four songwriters out of the Chapel Hill N.C. college scene cite Ryan Adams, the Beatles and Toad the Wet Sprocket among their influences -- as well as ee cummings. Their tight vocal harmonies and strong pop arrangements make the local music scene in any semester.
Formed in May 2001 in Chapel Hill, NC, Allday Afternoon is an acoustic rock band featuring the talents of songwriters Joel Turner, Alex Rhodes, KJ Straub, and Keith Sigel who collectively cite diverse influences such as Guster, Pete Yorn, Toad the Wet Sprocket, the Beatles, Ryan Adams, and the Connells. The band is composed of two acoustic guitars, electric guitar, bass, and drums (played by Allday Afternoon’s fifth member Nick Wagner), with a strong emphasis on vocal harmonies. Rhodes, Straub, & Sigel all share singing duties in the band with Rhodes taking the lead on a majority of the songs. Allday Afternoon has quickly grown into a demanding yet rewarding enterprise with a large following of fans in the Chapel Hill area. Despite their busy schedules as full time students at the University of North Carolina, the band managed to play several shows a week throughout the triangle area, including an opening spot for popular regional bands Cravin' Melon (Mercury Records). After concluding a hectic fall, the band entered the studio in January 2002 for the first time, recording the EP Everything After North St. at Studioworks in Durham , NC . Described as “beautiful,” with “priceless melodies,” (leftoffthedial.com) putting the band in a “thoughtful league of their own” (raleighmusic.com), the EP received play on local college radio stations. After a busy spring supporting the new release and headlining several large scale charity shows (600 + spectators), the band regrouped for the summer and began focusing on new original material. These efforts culminated in August of 2002, when after several months of intense songwriting and rehearsal, Allday Afternoon re-entered the studio to record Open Ended, their first full-length album. Recorded and mixed at Downtown Sound Studios in Raleigh, NC and produced by Allday Afternoon and Chip Birge, the album contains 11 original songs. The album went on sale in Triangle area stores and on the internet (www.alldayafternoon.net) beginning September 26, 2002. The band has an extensive schedule of live shows planned to support their new release, and recently performed on WXII TV Channel 12 in Winston- Salem, NC on the morning news. They also recently attended the Mid-Atlantic Music Conference held in Charlotte, NC where they were invited to play during the main showcase.
