American Gun

Formed mid-2004 in Columbia, South Carolina by veteran members of the thriving music scene, American Gun quickly became a local favorite while also branching out to other areas around the Southeast drawing crowds in Savannah, Atlanta, Charlotte, Macon and beyond. In late 2004, American Gun recorded Demos, Guns & Girls, a collection of tunes thrown together in order to book shows. After a few shows the band had numerous requests for recorded material, so they had a few hundred copies printed. The collection quickly sold out, but instead of printing more, the band made the recordings available for free on their website and decided to record a more proper album. Enter Dark Southern Hearts, released by the band in September of 2006. Produced by singer/songwriters Todd Mathis and Donald Merckle, the creative, diverse and professional talents of engineers Steve Slavich (Danielle Howle, Stretch Armstrong), mixer John Morand (Cracker, Sparklehorse) and artist Sasha Barr were employed. The 12 song recording immediately earned critical praise throughout the Southeast while also reaching an audience overseas garnering acclaim in publications in Great Britain, Belgium and Holland. Music from Dark Southern Hearts was also featured on several indie compilations as well as the PBS television series Roadtrip Nation. American Gun recently completed their new album, The Means and the Machine. Working with Chris Stamey (Whiskeytown, Yo La Tengo) and featuring a few guest musicians, including Al Perkins (The Flying Burrito Brothers), the album is sure to delight existing fans while at the same time bringing in new followers to the fold.
