Portland's Amy Annelle, member of the band the Places, has one of those soft, enticing voices that sits perfectly atop a homey acoustic strum. Her charm is her calm, measured delivery and straightforward songwriting with an easygoing flow.
Amy came from Chicago Illinois. Someone said she was the female Elliot Smith so I went to go see her play a show at The Mad Hatter Lounge, a cozy little basement bar on Portland's east side, I instantly fell for her breathy vocals and understated stage presence. I offered to record her a few weks later and she agreed.
We started in the spring of 1999, in a tiny little room in my new house. The weather always seemed to be nice and sometimes we took just as much time to munch on cherry tomatoes, french bread and cheese.
The resulting album, Which One's You?, showcased Anelle's strength as a songwriter with stripped down instrumentation for her vocals to float over. This intimate debut was immediately embraced by those who witnessed a show or got their hands on one of the limited edition copies.
Amy has since finished her debut band effort with The Places for Absolutely Kosher. Bolstered by the solid musicianship of some of Portlands best, The Places will be sure to show up on the radar very soon.
