A former Berlin subway busker, this alt-country troubadour now plies his trade Down Under. Only the Germans can say whether he did such a mean Nick Cave impression before or after moving to the Bad Seed's homeland, but Camilleri has certainly chosen the proper model. His gravel voice and campfire guitar are perfectly suited to the spare, gothic ditty.
BIO
Singer / songwriter Andre Camilleri learned his trade busking on Berlin subway trains and the streets of Malta’s capital Valletta. He has been living and performing in Brisbane / Australia since 2000 where he formed Alt Country act the Strange Things. His main influences are Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Bo Diddley, Gram Parsons, Jay Farrar, Captain Beefheart, D. Boon, Henry Rollins, Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt and Nick Cave.
Whilst playing in a number of bands since the age of 19, in recent years he developed a growing interest to solo-perform his music. This set-up provides his singing voice with ample space and allows the audience to focus on the the blues-laden stories in his songs. The formula of stripping a tune right back to ‘bare essentials’ seems to be working for him, captivating audiences wherever he plays.
