Editor's review

A Philip Glass protege who knows his minimalism, but isn't averse to simple melody. This NYC composer bridges the gap between aggressive avant-gardism and abstract dream pop. Fans of Sigur Ros ought to thrill at finding such a properly hypnotic state-sider.

Biography

Fusing vocals and woodwinds with ambient streams and pulses, ANDREW SHAPIRO (b. 1975) creates a sound world that "blends the minimalist influence of Philip Glass with the moody pop sensibility of '80s New Wave" (New Music Box magazine). Growing up in Larchmont, NY winning numerous competitions as a clarinetist, Shapiro later studied composition at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Observing Philip Glass's application of popular production methods toward his manuscripts during an internship at Glass's studio deepened Shapiro's instinct to merge the classical and the popular. His recording debut, Invisible Days EP, was released in 2003. It was named one of the "Top 12" individually produced recordings of the year by Performing Songwriter magazine. In addition to composing for a variety of film and theater projects, Shapiro is writing his first full-length album, Pink Jean Mint Green. Other recordings include his keyboard performances Piano Solo (Etudes) and Soundesign (Ambient Electronic). Shapiro lives in New York City.
