ARTIST DESCRIPTION (long):
A powerful expression of living - that is how singer/songwriter April Meservy describes music. "Everyone comes from different backgrounds with unique experiences - so any one song can speak individually to different people. I like that."
Introduced at a very young age to songs from all over the world, April found herself captivated with music and began singing and creating songs of her own. Little did she know, she would later have the opportunity to share her voice in numerous places, including invitations to perform in China and at Olympic Square during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. In 2000, she would also record a mini-album of originals, Somewhere Between Sunsets.
Continuing to develop her talents as a musician, she now teams up with guitarist, Mark Miller, and other musicians for shows when in her hometown of Reno. She can also be regularly found in the recording studio. Diverse in style, her vocals can be heard on recordings ranging from jazz/blues to pop/rock, from contemporary gospel to classical. As a credit to her work in the studio, she was honored with Pearl Awards for "Studio Vocalist of the Year" in 2004 and 2005 as well as "Best Contemporary Recording" in 2005.
April is working at present on Harvest of Change, a debut album inspired by the path her life has taken - in some ways unexpected.
In her own words, "Over the past several years there have been many significant changes in my personal life: some with family, some with relationships, and some just with my ways of thinking about things. It has been a very profound experience for me - a huge catalyst for growth."
Earnest lyrics depict these growing experiences: "I wrote many songs to help me express much of the pain and beauty I experienced, as well as what I watched others go through." The intimate and distinctive lyrics of "Rainstorms & Calypso Rings," for instance, tell the story of a drifter who discovers more to life in ways he'd never expected. "I began to realize that most of the songs speak of change - and that I had changed." Her songs uniquely exploring this topic of change can be found on this appropriately named album.
And change it does. April's album is unusually diverse in style and sound - songs range from slow, introspective piano ballads to bossa nova to upbeat guitar-based grooves. In "More of Less," the moving rhythms of a Prague orchestra offer statements of gratitude in the midst of loss. One thing remains the same, however: April means what she sings about. "Change and growth create diversity. I don't think I can express change with any one particular sound, so this album will be quite diverse. It feels more natural to me this way. I write in different styles to put into music different moments of my life."
When asked to elaborate on what it means to her to be doing this album, April eagerly shares, "Regardless of whether we want it, change happens to all of us. It can be difficult. It can be beautiful. Many times it's both. I am grateful that change is an opportunity to define myself - give me a stronger sense of who I am and who I can become. Above all, I am grateful to my Father in Heaven who allows me to continually learn and feel things through music. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to be doing this album! I really hope that others can feel a connection to these songs. I'm convinced that change has the power to ultimately refine and lift us to be better than we were - and that is so amazing to me."
Harvest of Change will be released Summer 2008.
