Editor's review

Deep in the funk, Astroflava is. With the soulful vocals of Angelie O'Brien, the cool jazz trumpet of Patrick Marks, and a solid funk rhythm sound, you've got a powerful combination.

Biography

The story...

At the end of 2001, Carlos, Maz and Ange graduated highschool – They really really did! The infamous school band had come to an end. As did Optimus Prime and Sir Phunkalot. Pat and Neil of Sir Phunkalot, Maz the linking member of the two bands, Carl from Optimus Prime said “Hey, Let’s start a band” and after all was said and done, a lot more had been said than done.

Most people would describe their sound as funk, or at least with a funk backbone. Of course lots of influences can be heard through our music as our tastes are extremely varied and and continually growing. Ange provides a soulful icing on the cake with her singing and Pat gives the band a real edge with his trumpet playing and M.C'ing.

The name was conjured up sometime in 2001 by Carlos after he, his good friend Maz and Neil started a laid-back funk/groove band (which could have been called an In Sounds from Way Out cover band). And so it was written, May 2002, Astroflava was created. With 5 like-minded individuals there were several intentions for the band itself, but one most evident throughout all of the members was 'just to jam...'

After only 6 weeks playing together the band had packed out the local. It was that night that earned them a lot of support from people who before this date we never would have known.

Now, almost 2 years later, Astroflava has succeeded in recording two demos, being winners of various battle of the bands competitions, playing at our favourite venues like the Espy, Dizzy’s, Revolver and the Nash and also soaking up some air time.

Most importantly we have enjoyed all the good times we have spent with our friends and family whilst we created music with them – whether it be playing or listening.
