Editor's review

This eight-piece Australian salsa outfit is led by the impressive phrasings of Columbian singer Irma Monsalve Botero. The steady staccato percussion keeps your hips tilting ever so slightly while your feet stutter-step in sync. The bold blasts of the tight horn section add just the right amount of Cuban seasoning, igniting the spirit and soul of Latin American dance.

Biography

The eight piece band features Colombian singer Irma Monsalve Botero, a pioneer of the Sydney salsa movement whose passionate stage performance with a characteristic timing phrasing and feeling, captivates the audience leaving them breathless.

Irma was born in Cali, The Salsa Music Capital of the Americas, a place that gives birth to an exceptional number of musical talents, where the roots of Cuban music are an essential part of everyday life and greatly influenced her early years.

Babalu was formed by Irma in 1996 and performed for first time at Carnavale that year, since then they have appeared in numerous festivals like World eleven, the Sydney Festival Bacardi Latino, Songs of the Wind, Folk on Higher Ground, and Headlined Winter Magic to an audience of 20.000 dancers.
