Editor's review

After his departure from Pilot Light in 2001, Vince Caro conceived Basement Apartment--a stunning solo project that hints at alt-country and AM pop. His DIY approach to recording is impressive, considering how lavish and pristine his thoughtful, heartfelt songs are.

Biography

"Transistor! feels like a prime candidate to crank out of a convertible's car stereo while cruising around Lake Harriett with the top down." --Rob van Alstyne, Pulse of the Twin Cities

"mellow-voiced and melody savvy" --Dylan Hicks, City Pages

Basement Apartment is the solo project of former Pilot Light guitarist Vince Caro. Conceived in 2001, BA originally started out as a school assignment incorporating sound with visuals. Playing most of the instruments with guitar help from Kristina Kerr (ex-Pilot Light, Pine Marten Group) and friends, Caro successfully released Interstellar EP in 2002 on local indie label Susstones to warm reviews. Subsequent to its release was the band's first video for "Learning to Fall" (officially selected for the Sound Unseen Film Festival in 2003). To translate the EP live, a slew of Minneapolis' Finest rounded out the lineup for most of 2002-03; including Janey Winterbauer of Astronaut Wife on vox and keys, Ashley Prenzlow of The Moodswings on bass and Marc Iwanin of Medication on drums and vocals. In late 2003 to early 2004, Basement Apartment compiled 13 new tracks for a more realized full-length, Transistor! Inspired by the AM pop of his youth, Caro continued with the lo-fi DIY attitude that has worked so well in the past. Recorded at various homes in Minneapolis, the album recruited even more collaborators this time around. Former Pilot Lighters C.A. Grooms, Steve Finch and Joey Donahue contribute on production and backbeat respectively. Tim Ritter of Astronaut Wife (bass), Moon Wells of My Liquid Head (bass), Jesse Peterson of Medication (guitar) and the Original Mark Edwards on vox sweeten up the mix.
