Although she brings enough melody and sass to satisfy any jones for sugary pop, Becca Schack knows that too many sweets can make you sick. That's why her candy-coated songs have intricate layers of ambient textures and trip-hop beats. It's a heady artistic endeavor and a guilty pleasure all at once.
Becca Schack is a New York based performer, composer, and lyricist. Her music is a mixture of pop, trip-hop, and tribal house, with a strong rhythmic base rooted in jazz, Brazilian and Middle Eastern sounds. She draws inspiration from the string quartets of Debussy and Ravel to John Coltrane and the sounds she has heard dancing in the clubs of New York City. The music she writes and produces is full of intense and unusual beats, mesmerizing melodic lines, flowing harmonies, and raw human emotion. Becca is a true singer/songwriter who composes, arranges, produces, and performs her own music, moving seamlessly from acoustic piano to orchestral scores to electro-dance pop. A newcomer to the New York scene, Becca has already been recognized for creating exciting multi-media performances. This can be attributed to her diverse background; she studied dance, acting, and painting before honing her skills as a musician. Her music background is extensive; she has been playing piano, singing, and composing pieces for keyboards, vocals, and instrumental ensembles since the age of five. She is a classically trained pianist and vocalist and has a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Composition from The Juilliard School. She has participated in jazz workshops at the Manhattan School of Music and film-scoring workshops at NYU. Becca has composed numerous classically-driven pieces for full orchestra, chamber groups, and percussion quartets. She has incorporated video, live electronics and dance into her work and has also written compositions for short films. She was a finalist in the 2004 John Lennon Songwriting Contest (Electronic Category) and she received honorable mention in two ASCAP Young Composers competitions, the first one at age eleven. Her compositions have been played by members of the New York Philharmonic and some of the most exciting musicians on the east coast. Additionally, she has been quoted in The New York Times as well as Strings magazine. Becca Schack's originality and technical prowess has brought her to music venues spanning New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, and Mexico. She has explored the classical, jazz, pop, funk, Latin, dance and R&B genres and has recently played with groups such as Cantinero, Samsara, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Braindance. Her performances have taken her from the Apollo Theater and Lincoln Center in New York City to the Borderline in London. Her wide vocal range and crossover appeal sets her apart from other artists. She is currently working on her solo EP, which is soon to be released.
