Editor's review

Perhaps we should think about Bergelt's piano material as a fine wine, in which different varietals are brought into proportion. Only instead of grapes we have genres--say 70 percent jazz, with 20 percent classical, and 10 percent trad folk. The exact mix is as inscrutable as it is sublime.

Biography

After Bill Bergelt had published his poetry-book 'Inmitten der Bucht - vom Rand her' and his album 'Hellas - Solo Piano' he came out with Hellas Project - Piano und Poesie - a multimedia presentation of his poetry combined with music and photo-show. Here the multitalented artist found back to his roots: In the 80th he started his career with the jazz-duo Solidaire-Solitaire, the jazz band Bill Bergelt Brikett and the literary revue Trichterdio. Several stays in Greece, the intimate contact with ancient Greece as well as present-day Greece were the initial idea for this art project. Just listen to the musical phrases, the scales or the typical changes of time. Furthermore Bill Bergelt has been influenced by great jazz-musicians such as the German pianist Wolfgang Dauner or jazz legend Chick Corea. Therefore the first composition on the Album In Dauning Street is meant as an ironic tribute to Dauner. Greece is presented in the Hellas cycle: Hellas Impression, Hellas or Hellas Steps. On several tracks Bergelt plays simultaneously the grand piano, a sampled vibraphone and other sampled instruments. The recent project of Bill Bergelt - Duo Yazzango with the bandoneon-player Karin Eckstein - presents again a blend of different styles. With elements from Jazz, Tango and compositions inspired by traditions from folklore he has created a new individual style.
