Billie Holiday in my opinion is the most genuine female vocalist I have ever heard, right through her whole career she really expressed the meaning of the songs she sang.
After a very torrid childhood where she was taunted fiercely by the racist segregation of the USA she remained in triumph of all the cruelty thrown at her through her vocals. Billie could sing blues and ballads like no other singer. When you listened to the lyrics of the songs she sang you get the message that she had experienced everything she sang about. The last period of her life in the early 1950's I think was the best of her career where she had developed so much character in each note she sang, Billie was a beautiful emotional artist and writer as well. We love her dearly.
