In the land of landslides, flash floods and valleys of stars, Birds & Batteries have discovered their own California summer with their latest effort, I'll Never Sleep Again. Inspired by the sparkle of 70's studio rock (Neil Young, Steely Dan) and driven by the compositional freedom of electronic music (Cornelius, Daft Punk), the album has received high praise from critics, bloggers and fans nation-wide.
The music of Birds & Batteries started in Boston and Cape Cod, MA. After completing the 18-track demo titled Nature vs. Nature, Sempert moved to San Francisco and met drummer Brian Michelson while working at the legendary Hotel Utah Saloon. This chance encounter was the first step towards solidifying the foundation for Birds & Batteries in SF. Now with Jill Heinke (bass) and Christopher Walsh (pedal steel and guitar) in tow, B&B has found the right combination of sounds and textures that well-reflect Sempert's recordings, but also raise them to a new level in a live setting. The band has brought their energetic live show to stages all over the country through consistent touring.
Equal parts explosive pop and epic balladry, four-on-the-floor beats and lonesome Americana, B&B have taken another step down their path of genre-defying music. Call it country rock for the information age, the urban pastoral or what you will, Birds & Batterie's I'll Never Sleep Again is a work of singular vision and startling originality.
