The phrase "spring break video" may conjure "Girls Gone Wild" and its booze-fueled ilk, but Thes and Giant Panda are working to change that. Their latest project documents a decidedly more mellow Mexican trip to a small fishing village, where they caught their own supper, snacked at taco stands, and found the time to chronicle the whole thing in rap form.
Baja Mexico is widely known for being a haven for under-age American drinking. Only moments away from the California border exists a spring break like atmosphere year round. But if you travel a little further (not to far or you?ll be eating tacos with Sammy Hagar), there is a whole other world.
One May morning, Thes One and some of his friends from Giant Panda (Maanumental, Newman, Superbrush, and Sir Kado) drove past the discotechs and cheap beer. They drove down the Pacific Coast, over the mountains, and down to the Sea of Cortez to a little town called Mulege.
For two weeks, a modest built out trailer would be their home. They would fish for dinner; buy produce from the farmers who inhabited the town. They would eat at the local taco stands and root for the local baseball team when they played on Sundays. And they would also make some Hip-Hop and film videos.
Armed with two MPCs, a turntable, a mic, an ADAT, and two super 8 cameras, these five guys would document their vacation in a way that none of them (and perhaps no one else in the world) had done before. With no expectations but to do it, after a few roles of film and a couple tracks done, they knew they had something special.
Arriving back in the grind of urban Los Angeles, the boys listened to the project frequently and ended up playing it for select friends. Pretty soon, friends were asking for dubs and the encouragement to put it out followed. The first completed video made the rounds at parties and bar-b-ques, only to be debut at a film festival highlighting hip-hop videos.
The good folks at Tres knew that the Bloquera would be to good and unique of a project to let slip from their fingers, so here it is. Available for your ears and eyes: a different side of Baja, a different way of documenting a vacation, and to create an album.
