With a flow not unlike Mos Def, Los Angeles MC Blu is a newcomer who doesn't sound like it. In "The Narrow Path," Blu tries to tell his "folks that flowin' ain't easy," but we'd not be surprised if they don't believe him. Effortless in his delivery, Blu has a knack for those freewheeling rhymes that are perfect for a sunny drive or self-reflective walk through town.
As an MC, Blu provides hope for hip hop's next generation of wordsmiths. Representing Bridgetown (San Pedro, Los Angeles), Blu's street buzz has bubbled from performances alongside Emanon, KRS One, Steve Spacek, Platinum Pied Pipers, and more. His work with Sound in Color has created opportunity to rock along side a diverse group of artists, gaining worldwide appeal and fans internationally. Although his style is difficult to categorize, many see Blu with the heart and passion of Tupac, while displaying the finesse and rhyme scheme of Mos Def.
Working under the production talents of Exile, who recently produced a track for Mobb Deep's "Blood Money" LP, has amassed to much street buzz and critical acclaim among tastemaker retailers such as Turntable Lab and Underground Hip Hop, calling Blu, the 'next' in hip hop emceeing. His song, "So Amazing," off of Exile's Sound in Color 12" with Kardinal Offishall, touched college radio DJs and retailers worldwide, as Turntable Lab proclaimed to their customers, "Watch out for this kid!"
Blu's first full length LP, "Below the Heavens" pairs Blu with producer Exile on the Sound in Color imprint. His first single, "Narrow Path" has rocked stages across the world, and fans are beginning to realize the impact of Blu's music. His delivery flows flawlessly, while his content reflects the joy and pain of working class youth everywhere.
Blu is definitely a leader in the new school of Los Angeles emcees. His presence is undeniable, while his music captivates audiences regardless of race, class, and gender. Although many are still unaware of Blu's work, "Below the Heavens" guarantees to take LA hip hop back to the place where Freestyle Fellowship, Jurassic 5 and the Pharcyde left off.
Blu, the final artist on the Power 106 Summer Splash bill is a hip-hop emcee based out of Long Beach who has been selling records in the U.S. and internationally. His most recent effort is Below The Heavens featuring the first single, The Narrow Path, released by the label, Sound In Color. Blu is destined to be the next emcee thats going to bring the west coast back to the rhyming forefront with his untouchable lyrics and delivery. -DJScratch.com
A couple of great tracks from Blu -- featuring chunky, soulfully grooving production by Exile! Blu kicks some straight up, well worded and memorably delivered MC skills on "Narrow Path" that bodes well for himself and the consistently inventive Sound In Color label for years to come! "Party Of Two" features additional vocals by Stones Throw future soul upstart Aloe Blacc, plus Ginger Jackson. -Dusty Groove
"Narrow Path. This, combined with the other Exile/Blu joint you heard on this site (check the archives son!) is what made me realize that Sound in Color was running with some fucking heat. Turns out Blu is singing the hook, but you really have to see Aloe Blacc singing it with him to get the full experience. Dope beat, hot track" -Mixtapeshow.net
So there was an incident when we kind of thought Blu looked exactly like Blu Jemz. Then I saw some pictures of Blu without the Cali shades and realized that they really look nothing alike. In a more recent development, we noticed that Exile looks a hell of a lot like the Bogman. I'm just playin, but I'm sayin. The one thing that all these four do have in common is that they are all talented musicians doing their own dangs. This brings us to Blu's new single, which is produced by Exile for the always on point Sound In Color label. The two have a great musical chemistry that is similar to the energy that made Aloe Blacc and Exile such great partners in Emanon. Blu's flow on "The Narrow Path(1)" is creamy and articulate and it sits really nicely over the choppy cinematic Dilla-respecting bounce. Check the muted soul vocal backdrop for an example of Exile's great production nuances. Aloe sneaks in for a catchy hook on "Party of Two(2)" which also features Ginger Jackson who adds a really nice female energy to this frozen yogurt smoothie. This track is pretty sexy with a classy delivery, which is a rarity these days. We need to throw a party at Nu(blu) with both Blu's, Bogdan and Exile. Whaaat?! Chainless. -Telekinetic Kat @ Turntable Lab
