Surf music has greatly diversified since the wah-wah jangle-pop sound of the early '60s. For their soundtrack to "Stylemasters," a documentary about the North Shore revolution of the late '70s, Bluebird employs an abstract aesthetic: the music swells with spirituality but holds a darkly cool edge.
Bluebird's sound captures the spirit of the STYLEMASTERS era - pure, groovy, and radical. The original scores for the film evoke an appreciation for the ocean's power and beauty, accentuating the creativity and freedom of expression of this highly influential time in surfing.
Formed in 1995, Bluebird is a rock group from Los Angeles- a mess of hair, guitars, collision and exhilaration set to the odd light show, burning effigies and guest musicians. Bluebird's music and aesthetics aren't easy to define or explain. In the way that Black Sabbath or even Queens of the Stone Age deftly blend heavy guitar riffing with shimmering vocal melodies.
In the mid 1990's, as a rhythm duo, Jim and Bryan began playing impromptu and improvised sets in and around the LA basin. It was through these chance performances that Sam James and Barry Gordon Thomas entered the fray.
Although their bashing as a bass/ drum/ guitar unit accounts for most of their material, they've included other accompanying instruments and musicians in their work. Vibraphones and accordions even find their way into recorded work. Satellite congeros and timbaleros join them on stage. Bluebird has put out 7 albums since 1996
A documentation of performance surfing on the North Shore 1977-79. Journey back to a free era of change, when boards became shorter and movements more radical. A time when Style was being redefined and there were no limits to where surfing could go.
Shot in the late 70s on Oahu’s North Shore (with one side trip to the newly discovered Uluwatu), STYLEMASTERS chronicles the progression of surfing in this pivotal time, documenting the lifestyle and performance of some of the most influential surfers ever. Narrated by Greg Weaver and Spyder Wills, this never before released material has been digitally re-mastered and re-edited to an original soundtrack.
