With a heady mix that includes burbling funk bass, swirling keyboards, and acrobatic sax, it should be of little surprise that Auckland acid jazz collective Blue Train are former New Zealand Jazz Album of the Year winners ranking among the country's hottest modern jazz acts. Their cool, ambitious compositions are continually setting new standards for the genre.
Formed in the early 90's, Blue Train drew influences from the thriving Acid Jazz scene and set out to develop their own sound amidst it all. They did this with good success, achieving New Zealand Jazz Album Of The Year in 1997 for their release "No Free Lunch" and subsequently gaining popularity on mp3.com. They were constantly in the charts and one song, "Zaire" featured as no.1 on the Acid Jazz charts for many weeks. From smooth, compelling grooves to hard-nosed funk, Blue Train appeals to a wide audience yet maintains a truly distinctive and unique sound.
