After the breakup of his first group Long Fin Kille, singer/songwriter/novelist Luke Sutherland teamed up with Danish singer Signe Hoirup Wille-Jorgensen, and the group made its first big mark as Bows with the trip-hop inspired single "Big Wings," which appeared on 1999's "Blush." If you can conceive an ambient, more sluggish version of the Cardigans, you're halfway there.
LUKE SUTHERLAND, the heart, brains and soul behind Bows, is the adopted son of an optician, and was brought up in Orkney and Glasgow. He was the founder member, songwriter and lead vocalist with Long Fin Killie who signed to Too Pure shortly after Luke left Glasgow University in 1994. An innovative and experimental band with a cult following, their three albums, Houdini, Valentino and Amelia, gained rapturous applause from the music critics.
Luke plays violin with current darlings of the music industry Mogwai, and accompanied them at both Reading and Glastonbury festivals (amongst others) as well as in the studio.
Luke is also a critically acclaimed novelist with his first novel, Jelly Roll, being nominated for the 1998 Whitbread First Novel Award! His second novel, Sweetmeat, is to be published this year.
Then of course there is Bows, whose debut album Blush, electrified the critics and the musical elite world wide. Spin said that, "(Blush is) plush atmospherics norish vocals, and narcotic rhythms..." CMJ Monthly: "sexy sounds..." Cassidy is the highly anticipated follow up to Blush and showcases Luke progressing in many of the same principles of Blush, but expanding and diversifying, culminating in an album of truly sonic proportions.
"It's a little bit Bjork, a little bit Air, a little bit Roni Size. Classy" - LONDON SUNDAY TIMES
"Oh yes, the most gorgeous musical moment of 1999" - i-D
"Lush strings, stately drum’n’bass and skewed pop" - Esquire
"It’s magnificent. Single of the week" - Melody Maker
Bows is Luke Sutherland, formally of the band Long Fin Killie. This, his debut album Blush, mixes elegant drum and bass beats with strings, brass sections and features the narcotic vocals of Danish singer Signe Hoirup Wille-Jorgensen [from Speaker Bite Me] and long term friend and collaborator Ruth Emond.
"Big Wings" was the first single from the album and has garnered praises from i-D and The Face and "Single of the Week" in Melody Maker and Music 365.
There will be a second single, album title track "Blush," released on the 21st June including an Ellis Island Sound remix
Luke is a regular collaborator with Mogwai, playing violin with them live and on the new album. There will be a spoken word 4 track cd released later on in the year, with four bands putting music to text especially written and read by Luke Sutherland. Mogwai and hip hop artists The X-ecutioners are the first bands to be confirmed
Luke’s debut novel Jelly Roll [Anchor] was published to critical acclaim last year and was short listed for the prestigious Whitbread Prize this year.
