A William Friedkin film, with its complex psychology and taut narrative, places real demands on a score composer, and Tyler meets them in his tracks for "Bug." Tyler's work is at once deep and sleek, balancing eerie ambient washes with high-modern beats and angular bits of melody.
A trio of modern rock's seminal superstars, Scott Weiland, Serj Tankian and Chris Cornell, have fallen under the spell of Willam Friedkin, legendary director of heart-stopping psycho-thriller classics, and his forthcoming Lionsgate film, BUG, starring Ashley Judd and Harry Connick, Jr.
According to BUG music supervisor Jay Faires, all three immediately offered to write original music after viewing the film and connecting with the provocative film's deep, complex and dark heart. Faires said each artist had strong individual reactions and ultimately delivered "amazing stuff," including Weiland's "Beautiful Day," Tankian's instrumental "Bug Theme," and Cornell's "Disappearing Act," the film's closing song.
The BUG soundtrack also features two pieces of arresting score music by film composer Brian Tyler (Time To Kill, Alien Vs. Predator: Survival of the Fittest). Other tracks include "No Way to Live" by Sean and Sara Watkins of the progressive alt-country band Nickel Creek, Susan Tedeschi's country-blues "I Fell in Love," and Chainsaw Kittens'dark, punky "She Gets." A selection of period music also enhances the mood of the film: included on the soundtrack album are Leon Russell's landmark ballad "This Masquerade," and two outstanding finds from the back catalogue of rock and R&B songwriting/production legends Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller: "Shake 'Em Up and Let 'Em Roll," by the Coasters with a lead vocal by Leiber; and Alvin Robinson's cover of the Coasters' "Searchin'."
BUG was adapted for the screen by Tracy Letts from his own hit off-Broadway play of the same name. The film version has already been honored with an International Federation of Film Critics award upon its debut at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival event, Director's Fortnight.
