Alt-country combined with drum loops and electronic effects? Only in Germany. But the results are surprisingly true to the genre, considering Klaus Patzak's restrained vocals and slow-burn tempo. Patzak's songs simmer with a spaghetti-western feel that makes Broken Radio's music uniquely atmospheric--and unusually fun.
Broken Radio started out as a solo project by Klaus Patzak. The story goes back to 1991 when he recorded a song for the first Hausmusik label compilation. "Rain" a folky roadsong was one of the highlights of the critically acclaimed vinyl only compilation. The lo-fi recording was done in the Hausmusik rehearsal room with the help of Wolfgang Petters on lead guitar.
A few months later Klaus formed a folk rock band called Borrowed Tunes. They recorded two full length albums and a six song CD while touring Texas in 1997. For a long time Broken Radio was just a side project for all the musicians involved over the years. The band played several live shows with constantly changing line ups, but most of the time jammed in their rehearsal room just for the fun of it.
When Klaus was asked to contribute a song for an upcoming compilation album the idea of recording some of that Broken Radio material was born. Since Broken Radio did not have a drummer at that time they started using drum loops and began to sample those other instruments they wanted to add to their music. Combining modern production techniques like sequencing and sampling with traditional songwriting and mostly acoustic instruments became the musical concept of the project.
Finally the song "Trouble" was released on "Jimmy Gimme More" a Hausmusik compilation album in 1998. The following years "End Of The Road" and "Something To Live For" came out on other Hausmusik label compilations.
The new full length CD will be released on Hausmusik Records in the fall of 2004.
