Caliko's Jo Giles is English and so she draws her folk from a deeper well than many of her yankee counterparts. Like British predecessors Fairport Convention or Nick Drake, Giles is adept at mixing influences and genres. A rocking rhythm section and strong horn arrangements add power to an acoustic guitar tune, while on another beautifully composed song grand piano is all that's needed. June Tabor comes to mind, but Jo's voice and vision are her own.
At various points throughout the album you can hear the influences of Nick Drake, Counting Crows, Dido, The Beautiful South, Kate Rusby, Jeff Buckley, Boo Hewerdine, Eddi Reader, The Cranberries and Sting.
The album features the MP3.com top 3 song "Lifeless" as well as a special live version of "Monsoon" recorded at Augill Castle earlier this year.
