Editor's review

Pretty much everything that could be construed as "artistic" that comes out of Japan is cool: sushi, DJ Krush, anime, Gwen's Hairujuku friends. Now we can add Cappablack to the list. With iLleven on programming and Hashim B. on scratching, the duo isn't what you'd think of when you hear "experimental hip-hop." Unlike so many of those acts, these guys don't lose themselves in the "experimental," but they do correctly come with the "hip-hop" label, keeping a solid beat, adding samples and scratching, and some off-color stuff for interest.

Biography

Cappablack is a japanese duo comprised of iLLEVEN (programming) and Hashim B. (programing&scratching). Influenced by the raw hiphop sound of groups such as Mobb Deep, Cappablack released their debut album "the state of the night" in1997 from soup-disk, which combined experimental beats and noir soundscapes. This album became a classic instrumental album in the Japanese hiphop scene.
Their second 12 inch "the economics e.p." was discovered by Pole and they become the first Japanese group to contribute a tracks to the ˜scape compilations "staedtizism 3", "staedtizism 4" and "but then again"
Cappablack performed at the "Oceanclub - Berlin in Tokyo" festival curated by Gudrun Gut and Thomas Fehlman and played with Pole and Jan Jelinek for the January 2006 scape tour in Japan, which became one of the most talked about shows of that year.

On "Facade & Skeletons", Cappablack utilizes their advanced sampling skills bred from long years in the hiphop scene, computer based sound programming, and turntable scratching to create a unique electronic hiphop sound. The album features vocals by underground US West coast MC Awol One, and the remarkable rhyming skills of up and coming Japanese rapper Emirp.
