The folks over at Verve know what they're doing: releasing "Carmen McRae for Lovers" two weeks before Valentine's Day was no scheduling accident. But, let's thank them for their ploy. "Lovers" is a smashingly sweet set from an underappreciated chanteuse. Best moment: McRae's deft melodic inversions on--what else?--"My Funny Valentine."
